SAN ANTONIO, TX – On March 15, 2025, International Day Against Police Brutality, ACT 4 SA & Marquise Jones Foundation will unveil a mural commemorating 14 local people who lost their lives to local law enforcement. The mural will be placed at the Greater Institutional Faith Church adjacent to the “Spirit of a Leader” mural honoring the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The artwork was created by David Blancas of Republic Arts Studios in collaboration with surviving family members of the 14 victims featured on the mural. “Originally conceived in 2020, this artwork has been a culmination of almost 5 years of hope, grief, creativity, and hard work,” said Ananda Tomas, Executive Director of ACT 4 SA and ACT 4 SA Action Fund. “The placement of the mural at the start of the annual City of San Antonio Martin Luther King Jr March will serve as a reminder that the fight for justice continues, and that the same police brutality that Dr. King and the Freedom Riders faced in the 1960’s is still very real and alive in Bexar County today.”
Other contributors to the project include Texas Organizing Project Education Fund, Mano Amiga, and Borealis Philanthropy’s Communities Transforming Policing Fund. Attendees at the unveiling can expect to hear from Debbie Bush, founder of Marquise Jones Foundation and aunt to Marquise Jones, killed by San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) in 2014, and Alexis Tovar, the daughter of Melissa Perez, whose death at the hands of 3 SAPD officers gained national headlines in 2023. Both Marquise and Melissa are among the 14 people commemorated on the mural.
The event will take place on Saturday, March 15th at 12 PM at the Greater Faith Institutional Church located at 3514 Martin Luther King Dr in San Antonio.
