Community members joined ACT 4 SA and family members on Thursday, May 28, for a vigil in honor of CaSandra Pearson, a 29 year old woman who died in Bexar County Jail custody during what appears to have been an avoidable medical episode.
CaSandra had a known diagnosis of sickle cell anemia, a chronic health condition requiring vigilant medical management. “If you enter Bexar County Jail with sickle cell disease, mental illness, addiction, or any serious medical condition, your life should matter. Your cries for help should matter. Your pain should matter. We cannot continue to ignore people until it is too late,” stated Stephanie Shoels, aunt to CaSandra.
Attendees of the vigil heard from ACT 4 SA Executive Director Ananda Tomas, as well as members of CaSandra’s family and local advocate Lydia Leos. The message was clear: we demand answers, and we demand justice.
