Statement on the Vile Killing of Alex Pretti

Today we stand with thousands of people across the country as we speak out against the violent killing of Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents. While federal officials are calling this man a “domestic terrorist”, we know what we have seen with our own eyes, and that is the cruel and unnecessary death of yet another person at the hands of ICE.

Federal agents have shot five people in the month of January alone, and at least six more people have died in federal immigration detention this month. And yet in the face of this kind of death and destruction, the current administration continues to ramp up ICE presence, spending historic amounts of money to support their racist operations.

ICE enforcement does not make our country safer. It forces residents to live in fear, and is being used to expand the police state. Immigration enforcement is not separate from policing, it is an extension of it. Whatever lines that once existed between police and ICE/CBP have been dissolved. Joint task forces, data sharing, jail transfers, and federal-local collaborations make this one system, not two.

Every day, our neighbors face the dilemma of whether they should leave their homes for work or school and face possible harassment, questioning, detainment, and even violence during an ICE encounter.  No one in America should have to make that kind of decision.

ACT 4 SA will continue to stand tall in our fight against state violence, whether from police departments or federal agencies like ICE. We will continue to organize, to speak up, and to demand accountability for ICE agents, the police, and our leaders at large.
